I hope you're having a great week.

I hope last week's video helped you release some blocks around procrastination. It's never fun to self-sabotage, is it?

Freeing yourself from what's holding you back on the inside can rapidly shift your results outside.

In today's video, I'm going to walk you through how to break free from another major "stuck point" I see day in and day out with solopreneurs.

It's that uncomfortable (but necessary) part of the marketing process: asking for the money.

Not just asking for a client to pay you, but asking for what you're worth.

You know how it goes: you get to the "money part" in the conversation and a feeling of awkwardness comes over you, your palms sweat and thoughts begin racing through your mind like:

It feels uncomfortable asking for money when I'm helping them

Can I really ask for that much?

I wonder what they can afford ...

I'm worth more than this, but how could I ask for THAT?

This point in the process is where things tend to fall apart for heart-centered entrepreneurs.

You end up feeling like a fraud if you get paid what you deserve, or feeling resentful if you don't.

Having a "money belief" that's not serving you can show up in many ways, like:

Offering to barter when what you really need is cash.
"Discounting" your fees at the last second.
Assuming people can't or wouldn't pay you top dollar for your services.

The fact is, being paid less than you're worth creates an imbalance with your clients -- and ultimately leaves you feeling drained of energy or at the very least disappointed.

And all of that chips away at your self-esteem and your confidence.

Did you know it's ok to procrastinate?

We’ve had lots of 50 degrees days in Boston in January. Wow! It’s unheard of, but I’ve been taking advantage of it and getting out and having fun. Taking Cali out for nice long walks. What a treat! (Even though it’s 50 degrees out - we still have a little snow on the ground- check out the photo). I almost wrote that I was “sneaking out of work” (those old work and thought habits die hard), but the truth is, there are times when it’s ok to procrastinate.

One of the main reasons solopreneurs start their own business is for the freedom it gives them. So, if you can’t go and enjoy a beautiful day- what’s the point of being your own boss? If it’s difficult to allow yourself to get out from behind your computer and have fun, here are few suggestions:

It’s ok to procrastinate, when:

1. You have time in your deadline. (Hint – move up your deadlines in your calendar. It’s just like setting your watch 5 minutes fast so you’re never late)
2. You’re feeling a bit stuck. The thoughts aren’t flowing. Maybe you do need a change of scenery (away from the computer) to get the creative juices going.
3. If you decide to go out for a while, reschedule what you had planned on doing. That way, that task will still get completed.

If my suggestions make you feel guilty about procrastinating, here’s a short tapping script to help you.*

Karate Chop: Even though I feel guilty about taking a little time away from work, I want to love & accept myself (repeat 3 times)

Inner Eye: I feel guilty about procrastinating
Outer Eye: I feel guilty about taking time away from work
Under Eye: I have so much to do
Under Nose: But it’s so beautiful outside
Chin: I always work very hard
Collar Bone: From early in the morning to night
Head: Maybe it’s ok to every now and then take a break
Inner Eye: Get away from the computer and the desk
Outer Eye: Breathe some fresh air
Under Eye: See some new scenery
Under Nose: Give my brain a chance to clear out and refresh
Chin: This will make me feel so energized
Collar Bone: I’ll probably be a lot more productive when I return
Head: I’ll be much happier

Do you soar with the eagles?

The other night, I was talking to a friend on the phone, having one of those conversations about “life”. My friend commented how she liked to "soar with the eagles". She considered her friends “eagles” as they were “high flying”, meaning they are: action- oriented, focused, proud and happy with their lives.

Think about whom you call your friends – whom you spend your time with? Do they share the same values as you do? Do they have great energy that always lifts you up when you spend time with them – or do you feel depleted after talking to them. It’s been said, that “the people you spend your time with, determines your success”.

I often talk to my clients about who the have in their “Inner Circle”. These should be the people who they trust, who support them, care about them, love them, respect them and these relationships must be reciprocal.

An action step for you: Look and see who’s in your “Inner Circle”. Who do you value the most in your life? Do they meet the above criteria? If not, you may need to re-evaluate your relationship, as having them be an integral part of your life, may hold you back. Their negative energy can pull you down and leave you stuck!

It’s the end of the year, time for the holidays and you’re wrapping up your year’s end and thinking about next year. You’re wondering what will 2012 bring?

Recently, I spoke to one of my private clients and we reviewed all she’s accomplished in the last few months of us working together (including significantly increasing her income!). She shared with me how she had a party to celebrate and honor her successes. I thought that was a fabulous idea!

So, as you’re saying goodbye to 2011, take time to celebrate and honor all you’ve accomplished this past year.

For a lot of you, it’s hard to say “thank you” and take that time to be proud of yourself.

Here’s a tapping script to help you celebrate 2011 and move forward into 2012:*

Karate Chop: Even though, I don’t know if I deserve to celebrate this past year, I want to love and accept myself

Karate Chop: Even though, I’m not sure if I deserve to be proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished this past year, I want to love and accept myself

Karate Chop: Even though, it’s hard for me to accept all I’ve accomplished, I want to start letting some of that difficulty go, and I love and accept myself for doing that

Inner Eye: It’s hard for me to celebrate
Outer Eye: It’s hard for me to be proud of myself
Under Eye: I don’t take the time to do that
Under Nose: I just keep moving forward
Chin: It’s easier to focus on my mistakes
Collar Bone: It’s easier to focus on where I fell short
Under Arm: I’m not used to taking time to focu s on what I did right
Top of Head: It’s easier to be critical on all that I haven’t done
Inner Eye: I’m not used to treating myself differently
Outer Eye: But what if I started do things differently
Under Eye: Starting to notice some of the good things I’ve done
Under Nose: Taking a minute to be appreciative
Chin: Taking a moment to be present and enjoy it
Collar Bone: What if I tried that as an experiment
Under Arm: To talk to myself in a kind way
Top of Head: To let myself know I’ve done a good job
Inner Eye: To do this as an experiment and see how it feels
Outer Eye: If I like it, I can keep doing more of it
Under Eye: Rewarding myself for the good things I’ve done
Under Nose: Being proud of my successes
Chin: Whether they’re big or little successes
Collar Bone: What if I even did a gratitude dance when good things happen
Under Arm: I’ll bet the more I focused on the good things I’ve done
Top of Head: The more successes I can celebrate

Who aren't you helping?

Why didn't he fall?

Have you seen the Sundance Award-Winning movie "Man on Wire"? It's a true story about a young Frenchman, Phillipe Petit, a tightrope walker, who sets a goal to walk between the two World Trade Center buildings in 1974. I just saw this film this past week and I can't stop thinking about it. The obvious reason, is because of what happened to the the two buildings on 9/11. But, once I got past that and focused on the story, I enjoyed the film because it really focused on how important goal setting and trust is. I don't want to spoil the film for you, but I highly recommend it.

Thanksgiving Day Sale

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my friends in the States. For those of you outside of the US, our traditional Thanksgiving dinner is turkey, with lots of lots of other yummy foods, such as: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, green bean casserole, corn bread, rolls, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, apple pie a la mode ….just thinking about it can cause you to gain 10 pounds!

But, we’re having lobster this year. At first, I was a bit taken back by the menu decision. It definitely got me out of my comfort zone, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I liked lobster about 100 times more than I liked turkey. So, I can’t wait! (Un)fortunately, none of those yummy foods mentioned about really go with lobster meal. Oh, well!

In my last ezine article (here’s the link if you missed it: http://ow.ly/7gvt5, I wrote about being able to trust and let go. That’s so important in business so you can surround yourself with people that can actually support you! BUT, it can be difficult because so often we believe that no one else can do it as well as we can.While visiting my sister recently in Lancaster, PA, I saw a white pumpkin. I never even knew they existed. It was so cool looking, I had to take a picture to share with you. Ok, I admit it - I get very excited about these type of things! They make me happy.

If you’re the one making ALL the changes on your website, handling ALL of the marketing, doing ALL of the operational tasks, you have created a problem for yourself. You’re not leaving time to focus on your expertise, earn money and time to have fun BECAUSE you’re always working!

In the last issue, I gave you business suggestions for this topic.

Here’s the tapping script I promised to help you start release your limiting beliefs about this: *

Karate Chop: (repeat 3 times) Even though, I’m afraid that whomever I hire won’t do it the job as well as I can, I want to love & accept myself

Inner Eye: I’m afraid no one will do it as well
Outer Eye: I can just imagine all of the mistakes they’ll make
Under Eye: I’ll have to watch over their work closely
Under Nose: That will be so annoying to me
Chin: It’s easier to just do it myself
Collar Bone: I don’t know if I can trust them
Under Arm: I know I’ll do the job perfectly
Head: I won’t make any mistakes
Inner Eye: But if I’m always doing everything that leaves no time for me
Outer Eye: I’ll be working all of the time
Under Eye: My life won’t be any fun and I’ll be tired

Our first snowstorm in New England caused millions of people

[Success Tips] Do you trust?

Hi,

Recently, I went hiking in the New Hampshire mountains. It was a beautiful day, but the trail was rocky and tough in certain places. I’m not an avid climber, and truthfully, I prefer straight (aka “easy”) paths – where I don’t have to constantly keep watching my footing.

My bf was leading the way, as he had done this path many times before. What was so interesting to me is my bf, always knew exactly when to put his hand out to help me. I asked him how he was able to do that. He replied he knew where the difficult spots were and when I would need his help.

In our business, we hire people to help us because they have been done that path before and know how to guide us. But, it’s not always easy to give up control and trust others. To know that someone will always be there to put their hand out to help.

I know, I’ve run into that block in the past with different support people I’ve hired, as have many other people I’ve talked to. It’s this belief that no one can do it as good. The problem is if you’re too attached to that belief, then you’re not able to let go and spend your time on what you’re really great at and let your support people do what they need to do. It can be a BIG block that can send you in the wrong direction and waste a lot of your time as a solopreneur, and cut back on the income you could be making.

Here are a few tips to help with that block

When you hire someone, start that person off gradually with tasks. That way you can observe how they handle things, if they meet deadlines, communicate problems and the quality of their work.

Be very specific with your tasks. This is one area that it’s very important to over-communicate, especially in the beginning. If there’s a problem, communicate it as soon as possible. Ideally, you want to set that person up to succeed.

Be realistic. Realize that there is a learning curve for someone to understand your business and how you like things done. Even the best support person will take a bit of time to ramp to how you like to do things. But if they’re not the right person, move on and find that right person.

Knowing how busy everyone is, I’ve decided to put the tapping script on the next ezine so you’ll get a more manageable-sized ezine each time :-)

What's the point....?

There are so many talented and gifted solopreneurs out there who are starting to have some - or having a lot – of success. The problem comes when they start becoming so overwhelmed with everything going on, that the success stops becoming fun. They’re feeling like a gerbil spinning on the wheel in the cage –going round and round - and they don’t know how to get off!
They’re feeling overwhelmed, they’re complaining, can’t sleep, eating poorly, doing things they don’t really like or enjoy…and just aren’t happy. They’ve traded one demanding boss in the business world for becoming their own demanding boss.
Often, when this starts happening, these solopreneurs start unknowingly self-sabotaging themselves. Maybe they get sick – or something falls through the cracks. Opportunities get missed. The joy is gone. Do you know what I’m talking about? Most of us have been there.
What’s the point of going on this journey, if you’re not enjoying the journey? I could have stayed in my corporate job making lots of money, as could many of you have done the same thing. We left to start our own businesses – following our passions and our dreams – ultimately to live happier lives.
One of my greatest gifts, is helping solopreneurs reach more success, while leading a joyful, balanced life.
Here are a few tips to start getting you back to the place of enjoying this path you’ve chosen:
Take time to go for a walk and take a moment to enjoy your surroundings. Check out the picture of my view when I get up at 6 am to take my dog, Cali, out for a walk. Getting up that early is definitely not fun, but seeing this view puts a smile on my face.
Remember why you started your business in the first place. Are you heading in that direction? If not, you need to go back and review your vision statement and get back on course.
Here’s a Tapping Script to help you start releasing some of the feelings of overwhelm:*

Are your fears holding you back?

Hi Kate,

I've been writing a lot about fears and getting out of your comfort zone which seems to be a popular topic with all of you. What's interesting (and frustrating at the same time) is that the more both my business and myself continue to grow, the more I come in contact with new blocks. The more I get myself out of my comfort zone, the more I am presented with new things that challenge me - some I'm willing to take head-on and others make me stop.

On a recent visit to the beautiful White Mountains in New Hampshire, I noticed I have the fear of walking across bridges. I just don't like walking over them. Once, when I was very young, I crossed a small bridge and a bunch of kids came on to the bridge jumping and yelling, making the bridge shake. This really scared me . As a result, as a small child, I didn't think bridges were safe. The problem with holding that fear, is if I let it get control over me, I can't cross over to the other side. This area we were visiting was so fabulous and it was drawing me to it. So, I did a bit of fast tapping, took a few deep breaths and crossed over. My bf offered to take the picture showing me conquering that fear and celebrating that success.

What fears do you have that are holding you back from moving forward in your professional and personal life? My clients share so many stories with me of how their fears hold them back from: traveling, speaking at events, discussing money, networking, marketing their business and much more!

Here's a suggestion to start moving you forward:

1. Pick a fear that you would most like to conquer

2. Develop action steps to help you get past that fear. For example: Fear of networking events
a. Check out upcoming events in your area, find one that interests you and put it in your calendar
b. If you want, bring a friend to that event
c. Bring lots of business cards and your smile
d. Pretend you are the host of that event and go up to at least 3 attendees and introduce yourself
e. People love to talk about themselves. Ask those people about themselves and their business. Ask how you might be able to help them.
f. Offer your business card and ask if you can continue to stay in touch

3. Congratulations on taking this first step!

Here's a short tapping script to get your started:

Outer Eye: I'm afraid to go to "networking events"
Under Eye: I always feel so uncomfortable when I go
Under Nose: I'm not sure what to say or how to act
Chin: I feel like everyone else belongs there but me
Collar Bone: I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb
Liver: It's easier for everyone else to be here
Under Arm: So, I'd rather stay home and not go
Wrist: It's easier not to put myself out
Top of Head: In the past, I haven't felt comfortable
at these type of events
Inner Eye: But maybe it had something to do with my mindset
Outer Eye: In the past, I always expected it to be scary
Under Eye: What if I changed my mindset and thought of it as a big party
Under nose: And I was one of the guests of honor
Chin: Or what if I changed my mindset and thought of everyone attending as friends
Collar Bone: That would make it easier for me
to go to these events and feel comfortable
Liver: This mindset would make me feel more relaxed
Under Arm: It would make me feel more positive about attending
Wrist: And if I feel more positive, I'll enjoy myself more

Top of Head: And with that attitude, lots of good things will happen

I finally did it!!!

Hi Kate,

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. After having a great interview with my recent guest, Kailash Sozzani, on my radio show, I felt truly inspired to do this. During the show, we had talked about having our clothes, hair and home match and express how we feel so our energy is more aligned. This helps us have our inner spirit connect even more with the business we have created, allowing our passion to flow more freely and help contribute to a more successful business.

Although, I liked the haircut I had, I felt it didn’t truly represent who I was. So I cut my hair! For all the women reading this, I’m sure you can understand how difficult it was to watch inches and inches of your hair being cut off. For the men, it’s probably just as painful to shave off a goatee or mustache that you’ve had for awhile. But I am thrilled with the change I made!!!

Change is good, but it can be so hard. It’s much easier to stay in our comfort zone and do what we’re use to – what feels safe to us. The problem is if we stay in our comfort zone, we never grow. Our journey becomes stale. As solopreneurs, that stops our business from growth. It’s much better to be in a place where we’re moving forward in our business, trying new things to help us expand.

Here’s a little exercise for you. Look in the mirror. Is there something you’d like to change? Maybe you’ve noticed you’re entire wardrobe is one color? Maybe you’ve always worn your hair a certain way? As an experiment, try making one change this week. It doesn’t have to be a huge change. It could be something as small as changing the part of your hair or wearing a different color shirt. Notice how your energy changes and how people react differently to you as you make that change.

Here’s a tapping script to get you going:*

Karate Chop: Even though, I’m afraid to make a change, I want to love & accept myself
Karate Chop: Even though, I’m not comfortable with change, it seems so much safer to stay where I am, I want to love & accept myself
Karate Chop: Even though, I’m afraid to make a change, because I’m used to doing things this way, I’m open to the possibility that I could try something different
Eyebrow: This fear of making a change
Inner Eye: This fear of making a change
Under Eye: It really does scare me
Under nose: I might not like it
Chin: It might not work out
Collar Bone: I might not like it
Under Arm: I don’t want others laughing at me
Liver: That’s one of the reasons I don’t want to change
Wrists: I want a guarantee it will be ok
Head: But to stay the same can also be so boring
Inner eye: I don’t know if I want to live a life that’s so totally predictable
Outer eye: Change can be so uplifting
Under eye: But what if I try something different with my appearance and it doesn’t look good
Under nose: What if I wear a red shirt instead of my usual black one and it looks horrible?
Chin: Logically, I know I don’t have to wear that shirt again
Collar Bone: But, what if the opposite happens and the red shirt does looks really great on me & I get lots of compliments
Under Arm: It can be fun to try something different and to experiment
Liver: At least I’m trying something new and can be proud of myself for that
Wrists: I’ll never know unless I try

Head: So I’m going to give change a chance

"LIve Slow...Sail Fast"

Some people collect coffee mugs or key chains when they travel. I collect t-shirts. Among my favorites are my t-shirts from the Caribbean that have “Live Slow” on the front ...and “Sail Fast” on the back. (yes, I have them in lots of colors!) . People always stop me when I’m wearing those t-shirts telling me how much they like that expression.

When I first started buying them years ago, I took the expression literally. But it’s come to mean so much more to me as I continue on my own personal journey. What it means to me today is to “be present” and to be “passionate about what I do in my life”. It’s also about balance, which is one of the most difficult things for most of us to incorporate in our lives.

When I was working in the corporate world, I worked a million hours and reaped the rewards. But I was stressed out all of the time. Not sleeping well and overwhelmed a lot.

Now I make much better choices for myself. I’ve learned what to say “yes” to and what to say “no” to. I’m coming from a more confident, stronger sense of self and taking the best care of myself that I can. This is also what I teach my clients. It’s an amazing journey to hold your self in this place.

Here’s a sample of some questions that I ask myself. I suggest you might want to use them as guidelines, too, when deciding whether or not to say “yes” to something for your business. This is one of the important steps to helping you create more balance in your life so you’re spending your valuable time on things that are important to you. If you don’t get a “yes” answer for each question, don’t do it.

Is this something you truly want to do?
Are you willing to give it all you can?
Does it align with your vision of your business?
Will it move your business forward?
Will you enjoy it?

Here’s a sample of a tapping script to help you with any mindset blocks about saying “no” to opportunities: *

Karate Chop: Even though, I’m afraid to say “no”, I want to find a way to love & accept myself
Karate Chop: Even though, I’m not comfortable saying “no”, because it’s easier to say “yes” and it’s the path of least resistance, I want to love and accept myself
Karate Chop: Even though, I’m afraid to say “no” because I might miss out on some opportunities, I want to love and accept myself and be open to start looking at things differently.

Inner Eye: I’m afraid to say no
Outer Eye: I’m afraid to say no
Under Eye: What if I miss out on something
Under Nose: What if it makes someone mad
Chin: It’s so much easier to say yes at the time
Collar bone: But later on I often regret it
Under arm: Then I’m stressed and overwhelmed because I have so much to do
Liver: I don’t know where to begin and sometimes nothing gets done
Wrist: That’s not a good place to be
Top of head: But what if I took time to think about things before saying yes
Inner eye: What if I paused and took a breath and thought if it was something I wanted to do
Outer eye: What if I took the time to think if this would be something that would help me

Attracting Abundance thru Gratitude (Tapping Script)

Dear Kate,

A few days ago, my radio guest and I were talking about the importance of keeping a gratitude journal. This assignment is something I actually give to my clients as “homework”.

Keeping a gratitude journal is an important way of changing your daily mindset. A popular quote by Wayne Dyer says: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. Therefore, when you’re focused on the “good” in your life, you’ll attract more positives and success into your life.

There have been many studies on the effectiveness of being grateful. Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology, discovered in one of his studies about the use of gratitude, after 15 days, 94 percent of the participants had a decrease in depression and 92 percent said their happiness had increased.

These are the steps I suggest to get you started with a gratitude journal:

Get a special notebook to use
Pick a time of day to write in your journal (I prefer the end of day, but you want to choose a time that will work for you so this will become a habit)
Write in your journal things that you are grateful for and why. For example, “I’m grateful for the customer service I received from my phone company because the representative showed me how to use their product more efficiently which will save me time”.
Choose how many items you’d like to write each day. I suggest starting with a smaller number and then working up to a daily list of 10 items.
Some of the things you will list may be BIG items, such as being grateful for a new client or amazing opportunity. But, typically, your list will include many minor items as these are the experiences that make up our days.

Here’s a tapping script to help you get started*:

Karate chop: Even though it’s hard for me to see all of the things in my life I’m grateful for, I want to love and accept myself

Karate chop: Even though, it’s difficult for me to focus on the positives because the negatives in my life seem bigger, I want to find a way to love and accept myself.

Karate chop: Even though, I’m not able to always pay attention to what’s good in my life and I seem to focus on what’s missing, I want to find a way to love and accept myself, and let some of these negative beliefs go.

Inner eye: it’s hard for me to be grateful when I look around

Outer eye: I notice all of the things in my life that are missing

Under eye: I wish my life was different and had more in it

Under nose: This has been a pattern in my life and my parents’ lives

Chin: It would be great to let it go and be grateful

Collar bone: But how can I?

Under arm: It would be as if I was accepting what’s in my life

Liver: When I think so much is missing

Wrists: It would mean I was settling

Top of head: I don’t want to do that

Inner eye: But what if I shifted how I was looking at things

Outer eye: And noticed the good in my life

Under eye: Realizing the good things were presents in my life from the Universe

Under nose: When someone gives me a gift and I don’t appreciate it

Chin: Then they stop giving me gifts

Collar bone: I don’t want that to happen to me

Under arm: I want to keep receiving abundance in my life

Liver: If I look around, I know I can see things in my life that I’m grateful for

Wrist: So I’m going to start out focusing on some of those things

Top of head: And become aware that the gifts of abundance will continue

Risk = Opportunities (Tapping Script)

This summer I’ve been taking lots of mini vacations. I always thought I was open to new experiences, but when my bf suggested renting bikes and mopeds during our recent trip to Martha’s Vineyard, I noticed several fears popping up. I hadn’t been on a bike or moped since college and just the thought of getting on one made me feel very uncomfortable. What if I fell off? What if I looked like a klutz? After all, he’s much more athletic than I am.

I wanted to say to him that it would be much nicer to travel around the island by car. Thank goodness I didn’t! Martha’s Vineyard is an amazingly beautiful island and the experience would not have been the same safely sitting inside an air-conditioned car (aka my “comfort zone”). Truthfully, I had a blast on both the bike and moped and can’t wait to do it again.

I hear time and time again from clients and people I meet how they aren’t able to take advantage of new opportunities (speaking engagements, joint ventures, networking and more) for their business. This results in their business moving forward very slowly.

Do you find some fears holding you back from trying new experiences – thinking it’s easier to stay in your comfort zone where you are? If that’s true, you’ll probably notice that your business isn’t growing as quickly as you like.

Chin: It would be safer for me to be in control and make my own decisions

Collar bone: Deciding what I’d like to do

Under arm: What experiences will make me happy and help me grow

Liver: That would be really amazing

Wrists: Understanding that risk equals opportunities

Top of head: And would keep me safe
